HD Hyundai Marks 5,000th Vessel Delivery and Secures Landmark $1.5 Billion Containership Order
In a milestone that cements its position at the forefront of the global shipbuilding industry, HD Hyundai has officially become the first shipbuilder in the world to surpass 5,000 vessel deliveries—a feat achieved just over five decades after launching its shipbuilding program in the 1970s. The historic achievement coincides with the company securing a major $1.46 billion contract for ultra-large containerships, signaling both its enduring legacy and its robust momentum heading into the next era of maritime innovation.
The landmark 5,000th vessel delivered is the Diego Silang, a Philippine Navy patrol ship that represents the culmination of a 50-year industrial journey. This trajectory began in 1974 with the construction and handover of the Atlantic Baron, a 260,000-ton supertanker that marked HD Hyundai’s entrance into global shipbuilding. Since then, the company has delivered vessels to nearly 700 shipowners across 68 countries, a testament to its international reach and the trust it has earned among commercial and governmental maritime clients.
HD Hyundai’s accomplishment is shared across its three major shipyards.
HD Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) accounts for 2,631 vessels,
HD Hyundai Mipo Dockyard for 1,570, and
HD Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries for 799.
Collectively, these shipyards have helped Hyundai surpass long-established European and Japanese builders, despite their deeper maritime histories. The achievement is not only quantitative—symbolizing decades of high-volume, high-quality production—but also qualitative, reflecting Hyundai’s role in evolving shipbuilding technologies, environmental standards, and global maritime capabilities.
While celebrating this historic delivery, HD Hyundai simultaneously announced one of its most significant commercial wins of the decade: an order from HMM for eight 13,400-TEU dual-fuel containerships, valued at approximately $1.46 billion. It is the largest single containership order since the 2007 supercycle and a strategic reinforcement of Korea’s competitive edge in the global container sector.
The order is managed through HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and underscores a shift toward more efficient, lower-emission operations. The new vessels will feature LNG dual-fuel propulsion, reflecting growing regulatory and market pressure for decarbonized maritime transport. Notably, the fuel tanks have been expanded by about 50%, enabling longer voyages and optimized consumption patterns. Each vessel will measure 337 meters in length, 51 meters in breadth, and 27.9 meters in height, placing them firmly within the class of next-generation ultra-large containerships.
Production will be split between Hyundai’s shipyards:
HHI will construct two vessels,
HD Hyundai Samho will build the remaining six.
Deliveries are scheduled to begin in the coming years and will continue through the first half of 2029.
By securing this order, HD KSOE brings its 2025 containership total to 69 vessels, representing approximately 720,000 TEU—the highest tally among Korean shipbuilders during the year. Together with the 5,000-vessel milestone, the contract reinforces HD Hyundai’s position as a global powerhouse capable of shaping the future of commercial shipping, naval construction, and green maritime technology.
